Artist's Statement

Magic Realism is an art movement which tries to establish a continuity of vision from its earliest precursors in the fifteenth century (and even the fourteenth, considering Giotto) to its most recent practitioners among the hyper-realists. We can mention Van Eyck (1380-1440) and Henry Rousseau (1844-1910) as the masters of this artistic vision.

Magic Realism gives equal importance to animate and inanimate objects, as artist seek to discover the magic quality of the common things. However, whereas this art puts a touch of magic reality, it should not be confused with fantastic realism, which portrays the imaginary in somewhat realistic manner. As someone pointed out: "Magic Realism is based on representation of what is possible but not probable; Surrealism, on the other hand, is based on impossible situations."

The creation of this toy-like world has always fascinated me but the term "Magic Realism" was unknown to me until I noticed that a number of art historians and critics have used it in their writings. Therefore, I can call myself a magic realist though from my early beginnings as an artist I was not aware of being one.

Let me now describe some of my paintings as examples of what has been discussed. The artwork "Young Woman with Cherries" features a painted portrait of a young lady in front of a bowl with cherries painted on it. It is an interaction between inanimate (two dimensional and three dimensional) objects altough the title of the work suggests a real person and real cherries. In "The Not So Bored Man" the interaction is between a three demenensional animated object (the musician) and a two dimensional animated object (the girl). The interaction between animate inanimate objects, two dimensional or three dimensional or both, is recurrent theme in my paintings; meantime artworks like "The Draftsman" or "Levitation" depict interactions between animate objects in three dimensions (that is, real person) where simple subjects matter is rendered with latent mysteriousness.
